There’s no way one can take Rep. Steve King (R-IA) seriously on his threat. It’s pure hyperbole and nothing more. His tea party are the ones who implemented this mess by demanding not to raise the deficit under any circumstance and now he says if we default, which we surely will if the votes are not there to offset the 100+ Teabaggers who will not sign on to raise the debt ceiling, then Obama will be impeached.
It’s like deliberately placing a bad teacher in a classroom then tell the kids if you fail you will pay the consequences.
WTF is wrong with these people?
Raw Story
A Republican member of the House of Representatives declared today that President Barack Obama could be impeached if the U.S. defaults on its debts.
The comment is from Rep. Steve King (R-IA), who told his followers on Twitter that they should “stop talking about” a potential U.S. default.
“The 1st dime of each $1 of revenue services debt,” he wrote. “Obama would be impeached if he blocked debt payments.”
The comment is ironic in that Republicans have played the largest role in pushing the U.S. government to the brink of defaulting on some debts by refusing to lift the nation’s debt ceiling.
Congressional Republicans raised the ceiling nine times during the Bush administration, adding over $4 trillion to the nation’s debts. President Obama, as a freshman Senator from Illinois, voted in 2006 against raising the debt ceiling, but has since called his decision a mistake of inexperience.
Today the president and Treasury are warning that if the debt limit is not raised before August 2, the government will be forced to default on some of its debts. President Obama even warned that Social Security checks might not arrive on time, or at all, if Congress cannot secure a deal.
Republicans have repeatedly sidelined talks, insisting that tax increases for the wealthiest Americans and corporations are unacceptable, as are cuts to national defense. They’ve instead focused on plans that would eliminate Medicare, dip into the Social Security fund and dramatically reduce the government’s workforce.

There isn’t going to be a ‘default’ unless Obama so chooses. The U.S. Treasury brings in $200 billion per month in tax revenue. Do you really expect the government to stop collecting taxes on the totally made up day of Aug. 8? Of course not. If our outlay for interest and premiums is $15-$20 billion per month with SS coming in near $42 billion and Medicare/caid at $52 billion. For Obama to say we won’t have the money to pay our bills and take care of our infirm and seniors is the lowest form politicking. He is a liar. If this had happened under Bush the same game would be playing out only the sides would be switched and if you can’t see that then you’re lying to yourself.
And frankly I want to see some of those 2 million government employed imbeciles hit the unemployment lines.

A “default” does not mean the government will literally suddenly stop having enough money to pay any of its bills. It means the government will not meet certain criteria for maintaining its credit standing. That will mean rising interest rates and general uncertainty in the financial markets all of which depend upon the economic stability and confidence created and maintained by our ability to live up to that long established criteria. A default crisis never arose under Bush because he repeatedly raised the debt ceiling with single sentence legislation agreed to by both parties without phony manufactured drama.
And don’t come over here calling our President “a liar”. That kind of comment is so unnecessary, so inflammatory and so disrespectful of our President that I, for one, take it personally and consider it code for something else.

Personally, “hoogly boogly” I prefer not to have to deal with trolls on this site, but in order to truly be fair and balanced I have to include posts from people like you, as well.
Your Limbaugh, Fox News’ regurgitation of the issues as THEY see it is quite frankly boring and illogical.
The real liars are Limbaugh, et al…but you guys are great at projecting…just look at Boehner’s speech last night…100% projection.

If you think I’m some kind of Limbaugh troll or Fox Newsie then you didn’t bother to even hover over my gravitar. And I called “our” president a liar because he is. Just like Bush was, just like Clinton was. But that’s usually what happens when you have such partisan views on everything. Someone says something you disagree with and you immediately place a label on them.
Hey LTL, don’t you dare go assuming anything about me by your “code” bs.
#5 by LongTimeLurker on July 26, 2011 - 8:23 PM
Did you publicly call Bush a liar in writing? Did you publicly call Clinton a liar in writing? If so, tell me where. I would like to look it up.

Oh my. The standard petulant ten year old response. Are you going to take your ball and go home? I’ve only been blogging a few months. What does that have to do with anything anyway? You essentially called me a racist because I called our president a liar because, well, he’s lied. Just because I don’t have some long paper trail of comments makes me what? Some kind of hypocrite? Try again. By the way I’m sure there is something on my blog where I called GWB a liar and a war criminal. Go look for yourself. I’ve nothing to prove.
And a default is our inability to make payments on our debt. Which we most assuredly can but our president along with his treasury secretary has publicly stated that we can’t and that they don’t know if we can pay the elderly their SS and Medicaid. Which is a lie. You see it’s not difficult. It’s a matter of spending not revenue. There is more than enough pork filling the budget on both sides to trim. Neither side is really willing to cut anything because neither side want to cut their campaign donations.
And if kstreet doesn’t want me coming here and commenting I suggest she not link to me.

If I wanted to call you a racist I would have done so. I am not shy. I did not go that far for the simple reason I had not yet reached that conclusion and I consider accusations of racism to be serious charges. But your vitriolic references to Obama, IMHO, certainly indicate something beyond disagreement with his political views. You say “I’m sure there is something on my blog where I called GWB a liar and a war criminal.” That’s easy enough to say, but even if you did, in fact say that about Bush, it’s very easy for any Johnny Come Lately to call Bush a liar and a war criminal after he’s out of office. Did you issue such a public pronouncement when it could have mattered? Did you call Bush a liar publicly in writing when he was in office? Did you vote for Bush? How many times? You don’t have to answer these questions to me (unless you want to.) But I’m trying to snap you out of your state of denial. Obama has been in office since January 2009 and here you are so outraged that you publicly call him a liar. You had 8 years to criticize Bush. Did you issue a public accusation of Bush mendacity, say, when he never found those “weapons of mass destruction”?
So when you come here now all outraged and spitting and calling President Obama a liar maybe it’s code language for “I never wanted him to be President in the first place” or “Joe Wilson was right” or “Obama is secretly a Muslim” or “Obama is Black”. (I’m not sure yet.)
And as for your view of the meaning of “default” you are absolutely wrong. A default is not an inability to make our debt payments, it is a violation of the terms of the lending agreement. A person or a country could be capable of making its debt payments somehow by hook or crook, but that’s irrelevant to the default that can happen when you violate the lending terms. The lender can call the debt immediately due, or exercise any of a number other remedies for violating the agreement. One of the terms of our agreement with the country’s lenders is that our debt not go beyond a certain point in proportion to the debt ceiling. If we default, yes, certain payments will probably still be made for some undetermined period of time, but making those payments in the face of all the consequences of the default including monetary penalties or having the entire debt called due could be problematic, to say the least. That leaves no room for our President to say to SS recipients “Don’t worry about any default I’ll make sure everything remains the same.” He would be a fool to say that. And Obama is no fool.
I don’t agree with everything he does. In fact, he’s been pissing me off a lot lately. But I don’t think he’s a liar. And it would take something much worse than anything you’ve relied upon to justify calling him that.

LTL, your questions are fair and your passion on the topic is evident. I hope we have more dialogue from HB regarding your questions. I think he dismissed them as “old news” (my words.)

Hey Kstreet:
Ain’t passion fun?
#10 by kstreet607 on July 27, 2011 - 6:58 AM
LOL! Well LTL, it depends on one’s definition of the word.

By vitriolic you mean me calling a liar a liar?
Let’s get something straight because you seem to not get it.
I am neither left nor right. You can’t label me as such. I never voted for GWB. Nor did I ever say anything about Obama being a secret Muslim, or some other nonsense. I don’t know if he’s a Muslim and I sure as hell don’t care.
The fact that you seem to want to toss this type of idiocy about shows the immature weakness of whatever the hell it was that you were trying to say.
Continuing to ask whether or not I publicly stated Bush was a liar is another indication of the weakness of your false argument.
Good lord. You’re like the simpleton caricature the right portrays the left as always being. You reduce everything to some stupid “well if you didn’t say this back then you’re a lying teabagger.” Christ it’s like you’re not ten but the terrible twos. Stop pretending you know anything about economics. Bye.
#12 by LongTimeLurker on July 27, 2011 - 1:47 AM
The only one of my fair questions that you answered was whether you voted for Bush.
The rest is all silly insult. Full of hostility – a little unbalanced, if you will. (And I say that with only the most constructive intent.)
